Inside the Surprise: A Ralph Lauren-Inspired Nursery Gender Reveal by Design AF
The Project That Required Keeping the Biggest Secret in the House
Most design projects begin with a client brief. This one began with a secret.
Two months before the nursery reveal, Design AF was given information that the clients themselves didn't have: the gender of their baby. From that moment forward, every design decision, every sourced piece of furniture, every curated detail was built around a story that only our team knew. The finished room wouldn't just be a nursery. It would be the reveal.
To keep the surprise intact through installation, a lockbox was placed on the nursery door. Design AF held the only code. No one entered without our team present, and the room stayed sealed until the moment the clients were ready to see it for the first time.
What they walked into was a fully completed, Ralph Lauren-inspired nursery for a baby boy, and a memory they will take with them for the rest of their lives.
The Design Direction: Ralph Lauren Heritage for a Nursery Built to Last

From the beginning, the goal was to create something that felt timeless rather than temporary. Nurseries that lean too hard into themes or trends tend to age out quickly. This room was designed to grow with the child, transitioning naturally from nursery to a refined bedroom as the years pass.
The Ralph Lauren aesthetic gave us the perfect foundation. Heritage style, rich textures, deep tones and a sense of quiet confidence; these are qualities that don’t expire. They just get better with time.
The palette anchors in deep hunter green, carried through a plaid wall treatment that runs floor to ceiling and immediately gives the room its character. Traditional panel molding adds architectural depth without competing with the walls. Rich wood tones run through the furniture. Warm leather accents soften the room and add a layer of tactile warmth that photographs don't fully capture but you feel the moment you walk in.
Every piece of furniture in this nursery was sourced through The Design Center Co., a trusted vendor partner that consistently delivers the quality and craftsmanship that projects like this require. The furniture is not only beautiful, but built to last as the room changes and grows.
The Crib Wall

The crib sits centered against the plaid wall treatment, which anchors the entire composition. A classic wooden crib with a rich stain finish was selected to complement the warmth of the wood tones throughout the room. Tailored bedding in deep navy grounds the color palette and reinforces the heritage feel without leaning into anything overly nautical or themed.
Above the crib, framed equestrian and heritage-inspired artwork completes the wall in a way that feels intentional and personal. Soft neutral carpeting runs underfoot, adding warmth and a practical layer of comfort for the years of floor time ahead.
The Reading and Relaxation Corner

Every nursery needs a place to exhale. Late-night feedings, early morning quiet, story time , these are the moments that happen in the chair, and the chair matters.
For this room, a caramel leather reading chair with a matching ottoman was positioned in the corner with layered lighting surrounding it. Sconces and a floor lamp work together to create warmth without harshness. A classic side table sits within reach with soft decor accents that tie back to the room's overall palette.
The Details That Make It Personal

There's a category of design decisions that don't show up on a floor plan but define how a room actually feels. In this nursery, those decisions are layered throughout.
A brass rocking horse sits in the corner as both a design object and a childhood invitation. Wooden toy trains and heritage keepsakes are placed throughout the room with intention. Natural greenery softens the deep palette and brings the room to life. Traditional millwork and cabinetry add the kind of architectural finish that elevates a room from well-decorated to genuinely well-designed.
None of it was accidental. Every object was chosen to contribute to a cohesive story rather than fill a shelf.
The Reveal
After two months of planning, sourcing, and installation, the door opened.
The clients stood in the doorway of a room they had never seen, in a space they had never entered, looking at a design that told them something they had waited months to know. The nursery didn’t just answer the question, it answered it beautifully, with a room full of intention and care built around the answer.
This is what interior design can achieve when it transcends aesthetics. It can hold a secret. It can carry a story. It can create a moment that a family will talk about for the rest of their lives.
Designing Spaces That Grow With Your Family
At Design AF, the best projects aren't always the largest ones. They're the ones that mean something, rooms designed around real life, real families, and real moments.
This nursery was built to welcome a baby boy and to still feel right when he's ten years old and the crib has long been replaced.
If you're planning a nursery, a custom home, or a full interior renovation, Design AF creates spaces that are thoughtfully curated, personally meaningful, and built to last.
